Education plays a critical role in public fire and life safety. A goal of Durango Fire & Rescue is to increase public knowledge which can help change behavior to reduce risk and loss.
Safety Class Offerings
PREVENTING FALLS
Falls are a common danger, often for older generations. Learn the hows and whys of common falls, as well as fall prevention and safety.
- Capacity: Maximum class size 30.
- Class Time: 30 - 45 minutes
HOME ESCAPE PLAN
Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you with as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Members of your family may become frightened and need clear direction in how to exit the house. This class will teach you how to devise your own home escape plan as well as help you in practicing that plan with the entire family.

HOME SMOKE/CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR CLASS
Learn the importance of having and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. You will learn how the two detectors work, how to properly install and maintain them, and what to do if they sound the alarm.

KITCHEN FIRE PREVENTION
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries. In this class, you will build awareness about the nature and extent of kitchen/cooking fires and will learn ways to prevent them.
- Ages 13 and up
- Class Length: 45 - 60 minutes
- Maximum class size: 25 participants
USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Training on how and when to use a fire extinguisher is essential at home and in the workplace. This class covers all aspects of fire safety, including how to identify different types of fires, selecting the appropriate extinguisher for the job, and proper handling and use of a fire extinguisher.
- Ages 13 and up
- Class Length: 45- 60 minutes (20-minute lecture followed by a hands-on activity)
- Maximum class size: 20 participants
HOMEOWNER WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS
Designed for homeowners, this series of classes focuses on preparing your home and your family for wildfire season.This series is taught once a year during spring, before fire season starts.
Classes cover the following topics:
- Home insurance and wildfire
- Home hardening
- Defensible space
- Preparing for an evacuation
- Understanding wildfires.
- Adults/Homeowners
- Each Class Length: 60 minutes
- Maximum class size: 30 participants
FIRST AID/CPR
First Aid and CPR are taught by Heart Safe La Plata. Please visit their website to sign up for a class.
SPARKY TALKS
Learning about fire safety is fun and enjoyable when Sparky the Fire Dog comes to visit. Request Sparky to come to your classroom to teach about fire safety and help kids build good safety habits. Students will earn a Sparky’s Fire Safety Club certificate for taking an active role in fire safety.
